Erima Eviction

More Eviction exercises are being carried out in the nation’s capital. Today it was at Erima towards the road leading to Wildlife.

The eviction sanctioned by the National Capital District Commission comes as roadwork’s need state land freed up for the development.

The eviction exercise began early this morning. Here at the beginning to the entrance of the wild life sanctuary. Houses razed to the ground under the watchful eye of armed policemen.

The majority living here were Western Highlanders. Many of them settled here back in the 1960’s. They got a court order to stop the eviction, however their order was unsuccessful. With the court ruling, they were illegally occupying state land without proper land title.

Due process was followed with a 14 day eviction notice given. Today was “the Day.”

A huge roundabout will be constructed here. As development continues to surge through the city, precincts shanties like this will no doubt be forced to the ground.

Change is inevitable and those affected have to prepare to move on. But it’s not just the shanties, 46 houses at Tasion Police Barracks in Gerehu will also be affected. Yesterday, there was resistance by the residents there.

Divisional commander for NCD and Central, Jim Andrews said residents were not properly consulted. The issue is still being resolved at this time.

The road project running from 9mile all the way to Gerehu and Baruni will see over 20 kilometers of road converted into a four lane freeway in 18 months.

China Harbor Engineering Company will be working on the project at an estimated cost of K196 million, financed by the Chinese Government Concessional loan from the Exim Bank of China.
