Nationwide Protest Next

Protestors in Port Moresby today called on the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O’Neill to resign from office within 24 hours, if he continues to refuse questioning by police.

They also called on Finance Minister James Marape and Kandep MP Don Polye to do the same.

A verbal petition was presented to the Police Minister Robert Atiyafa this afternoon, witnessed by hundreds gathered at the Unagi Oval.

Leaders and individuals said failure to comply with this and other demands would lead to a nationwide protest is this Thursday as the next course of action.

It was unusually quiet with less traffic in the nation’s capital today. Many schools suspended classes; however businesses went ahead as usual.

There was heavy police presence around in the city, particularly at five mile, Gordons and Waigani suburbs where protestors gathered.

Hundreds at the Unagi oval maintained their stand despite the calling off of the protest yesterday by the police hierarchy.

The NGOs, students and professionals gathered and expressed their frustrations on the decisions of the Prime Minister and the government of today.

They also accused the media of taking sides with the government.

Police Minister Robert Atiyafa arrived this afternoon, heavily escorted by police and received the petition from the people.

A verbal petition was presented to the minister to present to the Prime Minister and members of cabinet and parliament.

Among the demands were for the Prime Minister to resign from office and go in for questioning by police within 24 hours, all dismissed and suspended police officers and ministers to be reinstated and task force sweep team to be left alone and continue investigations, amongst others.

They said failure to comply with all the demands will lead to a nationwide protest on Thursday.

The minister assured the people that all information given to him will be presented to the government of the day for perusal.
