Electricity has now become an essential part of almost all Papua New Guinean societies.
While the government focuses on delivering and improving the lives of the rural population in terms of education, health and roads, much of these services will require electricity.
But as more and more villages will be connected to the main power grid, there are implications that may come with it.
The focus this time has been on East Sepik Province.
There is a mining and oil palm business prospects that will be developed soon in the province.
“The power station in Wewak town is small and can't cater to all the electricity load in the Province”,the PNGPL Momase and Highlands Regional Manager, Martin Bigiglen said.
At the launching of a rural electrification project in West Yangoru, in the Yangoru Sausia District last week, Mr. Bigiglen said, power outages will become more frequent as more users are connected.
Mr. Bibiglen says, East Sepik province must build a hydro power station to cater to the expected high electricity demands as the province goes through an economic boom.
The local MP and minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Maru, said his district needs to change and electricity will be a major input towards changing the lives of the people in the district.
While the government focuses on bringing down electricity costs, Mr. Bigiglen says, PNG Power, will also be looking at other alternatives to make sure that, electricity flow is not interrupted.
