First Briefing For New Police Minister

The new Police Minister Robert Atiyafa, yesterday met with Police Commissioner, Tom Kulunga and other senior officers of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, in the Minister’s first briefing following his appointment.

The minister was advised on the challenges and achievements of the constabulary, and the state of police work around the country.

 

He was given a brief insight into the Constabulary’s corporate plan, challenges and achievements faced, and the overall state of police work throughout the country, and the modernization of the Constabulary.

 

Deputy Commissioners from all four regions of the country gave brief accounts of police work in their regions, and the many challenges they face continuously.

 

In response to this, the Minister advised the Commissioner and senior officers that, he would not make any changes but will only help in implementing the Constabulary’s visions, especially the vision to modernize the police force.

 

The Minister layed out his workplan and thoughts for the Constabulary, stressing on the need for more police officers to be recruited, and the need for more accommodation.

 

Out of the many challenges faced by police men and women in the country, manpower and accommodation were the main issues stressed throughout the brief.

 

The Minister said the issue of housing will be addressed by firstly building new houses for new recruits while, renovations for existing houses will start this year. He said priority will be given to the Nation’s Captial, Lae, Tari Jiwaka, Kerema, and Kimbe. 

 

Police Commissioner, Tom Kulunga also highlighted that financial neglect was the main issue that made police work stagnant however, he says he will work with the Minister to transform the Constabulary.
