Bank Of PNG Cancer Awareness

Revealing a painful experience after suffering and surviving from cervical cancer, can be hard and takes a lot of courage, to share the experience.

This was the case for Cancer Patient Advocate, Caroline Henao, who shared her experiences to the Staff of Bank of PNG, on how it was like battling cancer. Her message was part of PNG Cancer Foundation’s Awareness and Fundraiser, commonly known as the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’, which was hosted by the Bank of PNG this morning.

This was the second biggest morning tea, hosted by the Bank of Papua New Guinea, to support the work of PNG Cancer Foundation. Assistant Deputy Governor for the Bank of PNG, Elizabeth Genia, said this year’s turnout was better than last years. Staff turned out in numbers to find out more about cancer. It was also part of BPNG’s community and social obligation to support the worthy cause.

Special guest at the morning tea was the Ambassador of the PNG Cancer Foundation, Linda Babao, the wife of Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill. Others included Dadi Toka Jnr, the Chief Executive Officer of PNG Cancer Foundation, and cancer survivor and advocate, Caroline Henao, the daughter of Loani Henao of Henao Lawyers.

In the presence of BPNG Staff, Caroline, shared her painful experience. She was emotional and couldn’t hold back tears. One thing that she highlighted is to have regular checks by the doctors, even if it is just a minor pain.

BPNG Deputy Governor, Benny Popoitai, told his staffs that it was important to go for regular checks as what might seem like a normal check, might enable doctors to discover and detect early signs of cancer or other diseases. With that, the Bank of PNG donated K5000 to the PNG Cancer Foundation, to support the worthy cause.

The PNG Cancer Foundation for the month of May to June will be carrying out much awareness on mouth cancer in Port Moresby and Alotau. Major causes of mouth cancer include the excessive use of tobacco, alcohol and betel-nut chewing. Details of the program will soon be made available.
