by Lorraine Genia – EM TV, Port Moresby

10 years in the making, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will celebrate 10 years of rugby union in the region this weekend.

The annual Black Orchid 7s tournament, will be held this weekend, in alignment with the code’s 10 year celebration.

The successful development of the code, has impressed the Autonomous Bougainville Government to the point, of investing K50,000 into this year’s celebrations alone.

The backing from the ABG has come after the union body has proved to have been one of the most successfully managed sporting code on the island of Buka.

Chief administrator for the ABG, Mr. Chris Siriosi stated that “our government is committed to such initiatives that have been an inspiration for young men and women of Bougainville.”

The growing code has not only contributed immensely to the ongoing peace process in Bougainville following the crisis; it has also brought in economic returns to both the formal and informal sector of the communities.

The support from the ABG will assist and support the Bougainville Rugby Union to enhance the successful development of the code, as well as one of the country’s most successful sevens team, Black Orchids.
