An embarrassing video showing a traffic policeman in Port Moresby asking for a bribe from an expatriate driver is being circulated on Facebook adding fuel to the public anger against the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.
The video was filmed from the dashboard of car and records the policeman coming over at a police roadblock.
After greeting the Australian driver and passengers, he then asks if the “registration and everything are OK.”
The cop then spends a few moments chatting about rugby league, the Melbourne Storms NRL team and other corrupt policeman who he calls “idiots” before asking for a bribe for himself.
“…It’s New Year and can you offer me a present? I just wanna have a few stubbies with my family… I’ve told them to prepare some food…” he says in the video.
The expatriate responds by telling the policeman that he doesn’t have any cash but is carrying bank cards with him.
In what would make his commanders cringe, he goes even further to ask the driver if they could go to the nearest ATM to get some cash.
“Do you trust me? We can go to the nearest ATM and you can help me?”
The video runs for a minute and 30 seconds but records what many drivers all over Papua New Guinea face at police roadblocks.
In recent months, the Police command has taken steps to clamp down on rogue cops.
In January, the National Capital District, Metropolitan Superintendent, Benjamin Turi, announced that 41 officers have already been suspended for a range of offences from grievous bodily harm to sexual assault.
While the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary works to weed out rogue officers, instances of bribery and corruption from those lower down the ranks continue unpunished.
