Migrants Rescued by Italian Coast Guards

By Lorraine Gabina – EM TV International

Over 300 migrants have been rescued by Italian coast guards in the strait of Sicily, in the Mediterranean.

Coast guards rescued the drifting migrants from three rubber boats on Saturday, 30th January. The migrants were mainly male, of African origin.

The Italian coast guard released a video yesterday, of the rescue of more than 300 migrants from rubber boats in the Mediterranean.

Thousands of Africans put their lives at risk as they go on a boat journey in search of what they think would be a better and easier living. It is a journey that begins with hope, but often ends in despair.

Most of them depart from Libya late at night, travelling across the Mediterranean Sea in broad streams with Italy as their central destination. Most are Eritrean and Syrian but numerous Africans from sub-Saharan regions also use this route.

In 2015, almost 2,000 people have died trying to make this crossing. Libyan coast guard intercepts many of the boats transporting illegal immigrants from across Africa to Italy.
