For the universal Catholic Church, it’s the beginning of the Lenten Season.
The Lenten Season begins on Ash Wednesday and is one of the most popular and important holy days in the Catholic Liturgical Calendar.
It comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting.
The ashes symbolise the dust from which God made us, and are administered by the Priest or laity on the forehead
The faithful accept the ashes as a visible symbol of penance, with the following words being said: “Remember, that you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, chiefly observed by Catholics, as well as other Christians too.
Yesterday, Catholic faithful of Saint Joseph’s Boroko Parish in Port Moresby received the ashes during the Holy Eucharistic Celebration.
The faithful were reminded of the 40 days and 40 nights desert experience, to fast, pray and seek forgiveness from God, for the Pascal Mystery of Salvation, celebrating the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
