Porgera District Women’s Association resumes duty

By Vasinatta Yama, EM TV – Port Moresby

The Supreme Court has given orders that the Pogera District Women’s Association be allowed to provide housekeeping services to Barrick Niugini Limited in Pogera.

In November last year, the Women’s group won the tender to do housekeeping at Barrick Limited.

However, the former contractor, Total Cleaning and Housing Service Limited gave them a stay order from the National Court, preventing them to carry out their duties.

Yesterday, Judge Steven Kassman set aside the stay order from the Total Cleaning and Housing Service Limited, and allowed the Pogera District Women’s Association to resume duties until a hearing at a later date.

The Association is made up of local women from Pogera District.

Their president, Maria Kensary said the awarding of the contract gave job opportunities to their mothers.

A month ago when they won the contract, over a thousand people in the township of Pogera held a peaceful protest march over the termination of the other local cleaning company.

Total Cleaning and Housing Service Managing Director, Be Tepo expressed disappointment of the approach taken by Barrick Management.

Meanwhile, Mrs Kensary said they won the contract but did not remove the employees of the former contractor.

She said the Association has complied with all the requirements.
