To develop the early warning system, CCDA and UNDP conducted a study to assess the current state of early warning system in the selected 5 pilot areas, East Sepik, Madang, Lae, Northern and New Ireland Provinces.
The report looks into ways of getting flood warnings disseminated as quickly as possible, to communities along river sides in the 5 pilot areas.
Discussions looked into how each agency, National weather services, CCDA, Universities and NGOs can help improve the system.
CCDA adaptation Division, Jacob Ekinye, says all agencies will be working together and are looking forward to phase 1.
The report provides a roadmap for an effective community–based flood early warning system.
Phase 1 of the roll out will take 12 months, and if successful, will be rolled out in other provinces.
The report concludes that there is an urgent need for institutional strengthening of the organisations involved, this includes capacity building, harmonising mandates and ensuring sufficient budget for the organisations to fulfil their roles when it comes to flood early warning system.
