The PNG Electoral Commission is yet to receive a second legal opinion from the State Solicitor and Attorney General in regards to conducting the UPNG Referendum.
The Electoral Commissioner’s delegate, John Kalamoroh, said in a statement today that the Electoral Commission was going to conduct the UPNG referendum last week, but was advised against it by the State Solicitor, Daniel Rolpagarea.
They were advised that the Attorney General’s office was looking into the matter to ensure that conducting the referendum was not in breach of existing court orders.
The Electoral Commission is not able to confirm which court orders this was in reference to.
Kalamoroh said the advice came as a team of nine Electoral Commission staff was about to leave for the UPNG main campus, and the Taurama campus.
He said to date there has been no further advice from the State Solicitor’s office, nor from the Attorney General’s office.
