by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Issues affecting children in Papua New Guinea are a growing concern.

With the increasing number of children on the streets, the national government is looking to review the current Lukautim Pikinini Law.

The Department of Community Development’s Anna Solomon said the new National Child Protection Policy will be presented to parliament. The policy is aimed to protect children in the country, as well as enforcing laws on parental neglect.

The new policy will also provide more basic services for orphaned children, something that has been ignored for years by the government.

Today, Lahara Birdwing Primary opened its new classroom duplex and launched its first ever child protection policy.

Secretary Solomon said with the new policy, the government will look to partners to help improve basic services to children and Lahara Birdwing’s policy is one that complimen’s the government’s new policy on child welfare in Papua New Guinea.
