World Trap Shooting Champion, Russel Mark, conducts coaching clinic for PNG shooters

By Skola Sengi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

In preparation for the Pacific Games in July, world renowned Australian Olympic and World Trap Shooting Champion, Russel Mark, and wife Lauryn, conducted a two-day coaching clinic for the Papua New Guinea Shooting Team, in Port Moresby.

Among his illustrious achievements, from winning his first Gold Medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics to winning Silver on home-soil in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia; the Trap and double Trap Shooting world champion was invited to run the coaching clinic.

Unlike Pistol Shooting where the target is stationary, in Trap Shooting, the target is launched from a machine, away from the shooter. The sport requires great concentration, precision and tremendous effort, and capability, of hand and eye coordination.

Russel Mark was also accompanied by wife, Lauryn, who is also a skeeter shooter. Skeeter Shooting is where targets are launched from two houses and their trails meet for the shooter.

The two-day coaching clinic attracted a total of 16 participants, both competitive and interested individuals.

Participants had the opportunity to run through basic stance, mounting and aiming skills during the program.

The coaching clinic also allowed participants to adjust on techniques and equipment maintenance.

With the Pacific Games in July, four participants have been selected with an additional four showing prospects for selection.

A final team will be announced in February, and will be participating in tournaments leading up to the Games.

Although our Pistol shooters have been dominant, they will face tough competition in Trap Shooting from Fiji and New Caledonia.
