MP Ganim urges teachers to be patient

By Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

Chairman of Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education, and Wabag MP Robert Ganim, has called on teachers to be patient as they move to address teachers discrepancies once and for all.

A working committee set up to identify weaknesses and problems in the education department and Teaching Services Commission has identified these abnormalities and provided recommendations.

Most problems identified are administrative issues. Mr Ganim said teachers problems in the country are not issues that can be resolved overnight. This is something that he wants to bring to the attention of the 48,000 teachers throughout the country.

He urged all teachers to refrain from any sort of industrial action that could jeopardise the 2015 school year.

Mr Ganim led a nationwide investigation into teachers’ issues between March and April last year. The report was presented to parliament in the August session of 2014.

Following the report, a special working committee was established. Problems were uncovered in the Education Department and the Teaching Service Commission.

According to the Working Committee Report, an immediate task is to review the functions of both the Teaching Service Commission and the Education Department.

Other immediate tasks include the need to review teachers’ salaries and allowances, appointments, leave fare management and review of retrenchment, retirement and resignation.

They also recommended for teachers to have a centralised information database. For this, more manpower must be recruited.

Chairman Ganim will present this report to parliament when it resumes on February 10 this year.
