PM Makes Call to Follow the Law

By Eric Haurupma – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has stated that as far as he is concerned he will not allow the Office of the Prime Minister to be demeaned or questioned in its entirety, by false allegations that have not financially benefited anyone.

He said this while responding to questions raised by media personnel over the recent arrest of Attorney General and Justice Minister, Ano Pala.

Pala was initially charged for attempting to pervert the course of justice in October last year. It was alleged that Pala consented with the Solicitor General to prevent police from arresting the Prime Minister.

O’Neill said we cannot allow that to happen in this country, and although nobody is above the law, concrete evidence to sustain these charges must be provided in court.

The Prime Minister’said to question ministerial position in the country is simply unacceptable if the matter has not been fully investigated.

O’Neill said we cannot have a vigilante style of police operation in the country, thus it is the responsibility of the Police Commissioner to take appropriate action.

“He is the only one tasked by the constitution and [has] the ultimate power of running the police force,” O’Neill said.

He said any other police officer answerable to the Commissioner should use all their means to independently assess the merit of these cases, and whether they should stand trial or not.
