Correctional Service Lacks Rehab Facilities

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea’s prisons lack the infrastructure and facilities needed to properly rehabilitate and transform prisoners, who commit different levels of crimes, yet all end up with the same level of incarceration.

Correctional Service (CS) Director for South Region, Henry Wavik, made these commen’s to prisoners today at their dedication service.

The theme for this year is ‘Forget the Past and Look Forward to the Future’.

The Correctional Service’s main agenda is to rehabilitate and successfully reintegrate prisoners back to becoming law-abiding citizens.

However, infrastructure and skills are needed for them to achieve their agenda.

Wavik highlighted that prisoners who committ the same offences, should be locked up in the same area.

However, this isn’t the case in PNG.

He also said the wardens need skills to rehabilitate prisoners who commit murder, rape, or drug crimes.

Despite this downside, spiritual rehabilitation and reformation is still a key priority, especially for the Bomana Correctional Service.

Today, they opened their prison fellowship ministry program, and dedicated the institution’s operation for this year.

Meanwhile, Bomana Prison will soon see new infrastructure built, to serve the prisoners and wardens.

Moresby North East MP, Labi Amaiu, in his recent visit to Bomana pledged K1.4 million to the prison.
