Located two kilometres off the main Sepik Highway and passing through Wingei Village at West Yangoru Local Level Government in Yangoru Saussia District is the newly established Wingei High School.
Having been set up in 2020, three years on and WHS have proven to be a worthy investment in terms of providing quality education and human resources development in the Wingei Census Division.
Speaking as the Keynote Speaker of the first ever graduation ceremony hosted by WHS three years after its establishment, Yangoru Saussia MP and Minister for International Trade and Investment Hon. Richard Maru said the district has bigger plans for WHS and that is to gradually turn it into a secondary school before the year 2025.
Minister Maru said the scope of work will include fencing, water supply, staff housing science labs and mess and library and staff rooms, three school Laboratory and Dormitories to cater for boarding students beginning next year 2024.
He added that the celebration for this upgrade from High School to Secondary School in 2025 will coincide with the country’s 50th Independence Day Jubilee.
Minister Maru said the school will serve West Yangoru and they will also invest in Yangoru Secondary in 2025 to make it a fully-fledged Boarding Secondary School.
He said Numbo and Sausso LLG already has two boarding secondary schools therefore his office will now concentrate on building Wingei High School at West Yangoru LLG and Yangoru Secondary School at East Yangoru LLG by converting them into boarding schools.
“Unlike other districts in the country, we do not have mineral resources on our land therefore we must cultivate our human resources by giving them the best education possible from elementary level all the way up to secondary and tertiary level said Minister Maru”.
Minister Maru urged the graduating students saying academic results is everything and they have to be serious with their education and be competitive amongst others in the country.
He further emphasized that the commitments he has made towards to school this year is purely based on student merits and the outcome of their individual performances and people must refrain from saying otherwise.
