In a significant address at a high level ministerial forum at the Conference of Parties 28 in Dubai, Vice Minister for Petroleum and Energy, Thomas Opa expressed Papua New Guinea’s steadfast commitment to just and equitable energy transition for a climate resilient future.

Vice Minister Opa said ,PNG, as the largest state in the Pacific with a population of approximately 10 million, proudly asserts its unwavering support for the international Renewable Energy Agency and Small Island Developing States initiative.

Opa highlighted that PNGs dedication to championing the global agenda on climate change is in alignment with Prime Minister James Marape’s visionary aspirations. 

He said the recent milestone in this commitment was the signing of a significant agreement with the French President Emmanuel Macron, securing a $100 million in forest conservation support.

“This agreement accentuates Papua New Guineas firm support for the Pacific Island forums and all small islands developing states, recognizing the undeniable reality of climate change and the imminent challenges faced by small island states, including those within PNG.”

Opa added that PNG is committed to contributing substantially to the collective effort aimed at creating a more sustainable and secure world for all.
