Fire destroys family home and warehouse

By Theckla Gunga – EMTV News Port Moresby

Two separate fires in Port Moresby have destroyed a family home and a
warehouse in the Moresby North-East electorate.

Fire fighters were responding to the fire at the PNG Forest Product’s
Warehouse at Six Mile, when they received the call about a second fire, this
time at Boroko.

The fire at PNG Forest Products Warehouse started around 6:30 yesterday
afternoon,(Tuesday, January 1) destroyed most of the plywoods and timbers
inside the warehouse.

Fire fighters had responded but the challenge was locating a fire hydrant to
supply water.

Superintendent Gabriel Paulus from the Fire Service says there was no fire
hydrant near the fire scene thus fire trucks had to rush to Seven Mile to
refill the tanks. Five hours after the first fire,

He said five hours later and the Fire Service received the second call – a
house at Angau Drive was up in flames.

Robin Kujap,
who lives next door, caught sight of the smoke. Upon realizing that his neighbour’s
house was on fire, Kunjap quickly grabbed a hose and tried to prevent his own
house from catching the flames.

Fortunately, there were no causalities reported and the firefighters arrived
in time, to help Kunjap save his house from catching fire.

But for the family affected next door, it was a two
bedroom house that caught on fire. And they lost everything in the fire.

Investigations into identifying the cause of both fires has commenced.
