Enga PPC Focuses on Addressing Tribal Fight

By Vasinatta Yama – EMTV News, Mt Hagen

Enga Provincial Police Commander, Joseph Tondop, says his focus is to address and minimize tribal fighting in the province.

Tondop says he will try as much as possible, to be present in all the fighting areas, in order to maintain peace and law and order in the communities.

This is his first move after taking the post two months ago.

The Enga PPC says tribal fighting is a major law and order issue in the resource-rich provinces of Enga, Hela and Southern Highlands.

Even though major mining activities are taking place in these provinces, tribal fighting is a setback for these provinces to progress.

Tondop has recently intervened at two separate tribal fights in Laiagam and Kandep respectively and brought back normalcy to what could have been a disaster, at the cost of innocent lives.

In a retaliation killing between the Kapus and Komai tribes in Kandep, five people were murdered and several others injured from gunshot and bush knife wounds.

At another fight between the Lamandon and Wapo Clans in Laiagam district, five people were also killed, homes razed, and food gardens destroyed.

PPC Tondop has given the warring groups seven days to stop the fight or the law will take its own course.
