Many Papua New Guineans have been closely watching the developments on the Australian political scene in Canberra which has culminated with Scott Morrison becoming Australia’s new Prime Minister.
Malcolm Turnbull failed to stave off a challenge by the Former Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton. Over the preceding hours, a three-way challenge involving Turnbull himself, Dutton and Foreign Affairs Minister, Julie Bishop, ensued with Turnbull eventually backing down.
Earlier tonight (August 24), the former Prime Minister, Turnbull said: “Thank you. It’s been an honour to serve you as PM.”
Mr Morisson has since pledged to tackle high energy prices and help farmers deal with the drought.
The new Prime Minister has always maintained a strong stand against asylum seekers. That is expected to continue. The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from the Australian public.
The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill is expected to make an official statement on the new appointment later.
