Families of 42 deceased Police personnel will now receive long-overdue life insurance payouts; a cheque of K3.3 million was presented by Life Insurance Corporation Ltd. to the Police Department today (July 13), to cover outstanding funeral and life insurance claims.
Police Union President Lowa Tambua, said this was only a fraction of a K9.3 million claim, that the Union has been fighting for since 2017.
But, he has assured families of deceased union members that the remaining balance of K6.3 million will be paid in fortnightly tranches of K3 million.
According to Union Deputy General Secretary Jammy Nala, families of the deceased have waited on these payouts since 2016.
Mr Tambua, in his capacity as Union President, thanked the Government, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and Insurer, Life Insurance Corporation Ltd., for following through with the payouts. He has also urged members of the union to now deliver their best in return.
He has also encouraged Police personnel who are not members of the Police union, to register with them for increased representation and benefits. He also remarked that a bulk of the personnel who lost their lives on duty were members of the union, and it was unfair that non-members should ride on benefits fought for by the union.
