The Sahara Forest Project (SFP) harnesses the sun, saltwater, desert areas and CO2 to produce food, freshwater and clean energy.
The project was first presented to His Majesty King Abdullah II in 2010, with the signing of an MOU the following year that committed the SFP towards conducting feasibility studies in Jordan.
The Jordan Launch Station was officially opened by King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway at a ceremony on September, 7.
The newly opened launch station uses seawater to cool greenhouses where pesticide-free cucumbers flourish. A solar-powered plant then desalinates the water for irrigation.
This launch station is the first step towards the realization of a full-scale Sahara Forest Project Centre.
The facility will include features such as saltwater-cooled greenhouses, research facilities, outdoor vegetation zones, and a solar power plant.
The objective of the project is to enable restorative growth, revegetation, and creation of green jobs through the profitable production of food, freshwater, bio-fuels and electricity.
