Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers A Month Away

As 2016 ends on a positive note for most sporting bodies, others are still in full training for events coming up early next year.

The CPL PNG Lewas for one have just a little over a month left before they make their appearance in the Cricket Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

After their win over Samoa, in the East Asia Pacific Qualifiers, they are now ranked first in the region.

Though, the CPL PNG Lewas have beaten competitors in the region for the top spot, and having qualified for the World Cup Qualifiers, the road to Colombo will be a tough journey.

These women, skippered by Pauke Siaka, under the Guidance of Coach Rodney Maha will have to amplify their proficiency in order to overcome the World Cup Qualifiers, in February.

Being one of the bottom four of this year’s ICC Women’s Championship, the Lewas have gone into strenuous training since arriving from the East Asia Pacific Qualifiers mid this year.

The World Cup itself will play out in June 2017, and the PNG side’s biggest challenge now is to overcome the likes of Ireland, Bangladesh and Scotland in order to get there.

With the vision of narrowing the competition gap between PNG women’s cricket and other bigger competitors, February 2017, is when the CPL PNG Lewas will have to make their mark.

PNG will be one of the six teams to battle for one of the remaining three bottom spots in the World Cup.

Neighbor and the bigger threat, Australia, have already qualified for the World Cup after becoming ICC World Champion, 2016.

Meanwhile, England, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Pakistan will go head to head for the top  three remaining World Cup spots.
