FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Heavyweights arrive

All, but three teams have arrived in the nation’s capital as the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup opening match is less than four days away.

Previous tournament host, Canada arrived today with a spirited Nigerian side flying into the country early this morning.

Nigeria along with Brazil, Germany and USA have made it to every edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup; and Papua New Guinea 2016 will be the Falconets’ 8th appearance.

From the North American continent, Canada and Mexico make their entry into PNG with much delight as both teams stamp their 7th appearance in this competition.

Meanwhile, France as regulars, have performed at five of the tournaments to date. Their greatest achievement was in Canada 2014, where they claimed their third place by defeating Korea DPR. This tournament marks their 6th appearance on the world stage.

Japan’s history at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup has 5 appearances reaching the quarter finals three times, yet failing to qualify for a further three occasions. The Young Nadeshiko are no strangers in Port Moresby having played against PNG in the friendlies leading up to the tournament.

North American heavyweights Team USA are expected to arrive tomorrow along with Oceania’s leading contender New Zealand.

Ghana will also fly in tomorrow to conclude the arrivals of all 16 participating teams for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016.
