2016 Academic Year Commences

By Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Schools across Papua New Guinea have officially resumed their 2016 academic year today.

Students turned up in numbers for enrollment in all schools across the nation’s capital this morning.

EM TV News visited several schools in Port Moresby and saw students with their parents queuing up for the registration process.

Students said this academic year will be a challenging year for them, however, they are prepared to take on any challenges and obstacles which could hinder the progress of their studies.

The enrolment this year is estimated to be far greater than expected due to the Government’s tuition fee free education policy.

Teachers are seeing a significant increase in the number of student enrollment because many students have come from outside of Port Moresby.

Education Secretary, Dr Uke Kombra, has rescinded his decision on the payment of project fees contained in a recent circular stating that fees won’t be imposed upon students, awaiting decision from the cabinet.

Students are expected to formally resume classes by Tuesday as registration and enrolment processes are continuing.
