Yangoru Saussia Signs Covenant

Yangoru Saussia district in East Sepik Province has signed a covenant declaring spiritual reformation and dedication to God.

The event, which coincided with National Repentance and Prayer Day, saw thousands from four corners of the electorate gathered at Yangoru station to witness the signing yesterday.

Local MP Richard Maru, PNG Defence Force Commander, Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo, and Reverend Joseph Walters were among those who attended.

At around 10am yesterday, Yangoru station was packed to capacity.

Students and public servants from different denominations lined up in colours in preparation for Yangoru Saussia district’s first ever signing of a covenant, dedicating the district to God for spiritual blessings and divine intervention.

Scores of people who turned up for the event marched from the LLG chambers to the main oval, led by a procession of pipes and drums and followed by defence force soldiers from Moem Barracks and dignitaries.

The event was in line with the National Repentance day and saw leaders from all sectors of government confessing their past wrongdoings before the people and seeking forgiveness from God.

Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo, representing the defence forces, apologized for all the wrongs and misbehaviours of his officers.

Presidents from the four LLG’s and local MP Richard Maru, also regretted their past and sought forgiveness.

Reverend Joseph Walters warned the people that the signing of the covenant was important but also very serious.

He said the covenant is a contract between man and God, as it was used before by the children of Israel.

Despite the hot sun, the people finally rejoiced after the covenant was signed and brought out successfully.

A one week evangelistic meeting was held every evening prior to the event. Similar events will be held every year.
