The Western Provincial Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Border Development Authority (BDA) of PNG, to improve border facilities in the province.

The Consultation, Collaboration and Cooperation MOU will see a similar border station to that of Wutung in the West Sepik Province, being built in the Western Province.

Western Provincial Administrator, Dr Modowa Gumoi, said Western Province has been neglected for the last 40 years.

“There is a great need for border development in Western,” Gumoi said.

Gumoi described the signing of the MOU as a start to a big expansion for the province.

Western Governor, Ati Wobiro, said the MOU will not only strengthen border security, but will benefit thousands who are living along the border. Wobiro also said economic activities will be boosted once proper roads are built.

“Trade with Indonesia will be much stronger when we have good roads that link the two countries,” Wobiro said.

Meanwhile BDA’s Executive Director, Fred Konga, said the construction of new border facilities and will be built once funds are made available by the national government.

“We are excited about this project, we cannot wait to start. But it depends on funds and we have notified the Treasury Department to allocate funds for this project in the next budget,” Konga said
