Vessel Ransacked After Running Aground

A shipping vessel belonging to Rimbunan Hijau was ransacked after it ran aground on a reef just metres off Fisherman’s Island on Saturday.

Over K1 million worth of goods and machinery were either looted or stolen.

Port Moresby police visited the vessel this morning and were able to stop further looting. The islanders removed laptops, cartons of beer and other food items.

Fisherman’s Islanders who were involved in the looting were directed by Port Moresby police to return the properties that were taken from the ship.

The ship was on its way to Gulf province when it ran aground.

Because the sea level around the reef has dropped, the ship will have to spend four more nights on the reef before it can be removed.

No official comment was released from RH but it is understood that there are 10 crew members on board.
