Venues Open to the Public

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

After three years of construction work, renovating and upgrading, the new look sports facilities in Port Moresby were finally officially opened to the public, for use as of Saturday.

Sport Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, made mention at the opening that the government’s continuous support over the next five years will be essential for the venue management, being administered by the PNG Sport Foundation.

Tkatchenko said this was to ensure the facilities are maintained and looked after, with the end result having the facilities self-sufficient, and self-sustained.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of the PNG Sport Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, said the opening of venues, and availability of use for the public is part of the foundations plan to generate cash flow, and revenue from each of the venues.

Maintaining these sports facilities is an expensive exercise. The foundation not only has to ensure it is maintained, but managed well. This will be their biggest challenge, over the next few years.
