UNRE Mismanagement Question in Parliament

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The running of the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) was questioned on the floor of parliament today.

Rabaul MP, Dr. Allan Marat, questioned Higher National News Minister, Malakai Tabar, over allegations regarding the previous administration led by Professor Philip Siaguru.

Dr. Marat said recent student unrest clearly shows the mismanagement and incompetency by those in authority to guide the institution.

He said that a recent statement by the institution to charge graduation gown fees is unnecessary. Dr. Marat questioned the Higher National News Minister as to why he has been quiet over these issues.

Tabar responded stating that a council is in place to administer the running of the institution while investigating the previous administration. Minister Tabar said efforts are in progress to restore the institution, however some employees at the main campus are still in contact with the former Vice Chancellor.

Former Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Philip Siaguru, was suspended due to allegations over abuse of funds.
