Today, the United States Embassy in Port Moresby hosted a presentation on cyber security.

The event was staged in light of the rapid growth of the internet since the mid 1990’s worl wide and also in Papua New Guinea.

While the internet provides vast opportunities to participate in the global economy, it has also opened up new avenues for criminal activites.

The presentation on Cyber Security is part of US Embassy’s Information Outreach to building the capacity of countries to combat cybercrime.

The participants were young people, who are the main users of the internet especially now with the emergence of social media.

Information Management Officer from the Embassy, Leo Shurtleff, gave some simple rules to follow to avoid cyber-attacks.

He said all computers have vulnerabilities and ensuring that keeping one’s software updated and having trusted antivirus software can help with cyber security.

He also had advice for social media users.

The United States is working with partners to strengthen the capacity of governments to prevent cyber-crime through training and information sharing.

Just last month, PNG launched its Cybercrime Policy to safeguard citizens and internet users against cybercrime and eventually prosecute offenders under the new law.
