Two Suspects Arrested and Charged

By Martha Louis – EMTV News, Lae

Police have arrested and charged two men involved in the killing of the prime suspect of the rape and murder of a Lae woman last month.

The payback killing of Meto Sawa happened last Wednesday, following an argument that erupted earlier between two different ethnic groups in Nabak, outside of Lae City.

It was reported that youths from one faction killed him and dumped his body into the Busu River. A youth discovered the corpse floating in the river and informed relatives.

The two men, Malon Peto, 32, and Masol Kepi, 21, have appeared before the Lae District Court for mention.

They are now being held at Lae’s Buimo Prison.

This was one of two separate killings around the same area on different occasions.

The first killing was that of a woman from Kabwum. She was alleged to have been raped before being killed at Gubadi in the Nawaeb District of Morobe province.

Last month, relatives of the woman demanded that the suspect be handed over to police.

While police investigations into her death were still ongoing the man believed to be the prime suspect was killed.

The youth from a mixed parentage of Morobe and Bougainville was killed and his corpse dumped into the Busu River.

The corpse floated downstream, later discovered and taken out of the river to Angau Hospital morgue.

Police believe the killing of Meto Sawa is an act of revenge by relatives of the woman earlier killed. The situation at Bumayong area is still tense and police are monitoring the area.

Police have identified the suspects involved in the killing of Meto Sawa. Four suspects are still at large and their identities are known.

Morobe’s Commander for Rural Policing, Chief Inspector David Warap, is appealing to witnesses to come forward with information on the four suspects.
