TV Program Highlights Gender Based Violence Prevention and Response in PNG

Gender Based Violence is the focus of a new 12-episode season, produced by EMTV’s Women’s World program, with the support from Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The first episode premiered last night, featuring stakeholders, including the National Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee, the National Family and Sexual Violence Unit, and the National Department of Health, among others.

The Oil Search Foundation has been working in partnership with Women’s World, and looks forward to the new season which will focus on positive responses and solutions as part of a nationwide response to Gender Based Violence.

The Oil Search Foundation Head of Grants, Kevin Miles, says, “Some of the key messages that we want to get out of this, was about what people can do when they are faced with family sexual violence, rather than focusing on stories and senstationalising on the victims side… what about what people who have survived this, and what can they do in terms of moving forward, what health services can they access, what the legal, law and justice process for them to follow.”

Miles further adds, “I think some of the key messages that will show through the episodes, and I’ve just been privileged to see some of the first episodes, and some of things people talk about is not being blamed, and that you can break the cycle of violence, but you actually have to make that change, you have to make that start.”

The Season will be broadcasted on EMTV, as well as Radio on Papua New Guinea’s information and music leader, FM100, and Online via EMTV’s website and social media.
“It’s great that this is going to be viewed in the evening, during family time, it’s something that is available for a range of audiences. It’s great that is it going out on social media, I’d really encourage people to share it on their Facebook and get it right out there,” Miles remarks.

More to come on the Season are the interrelated themes of Gender Based Violence including, health sector responses, legal and policy challenges, counselling and care for survivors, language and cultural beliefs and what men and women can do as champions for change.
