Tkatchenko on Illegal Land

by Delly Bagu – EM TV, Port Moresby

Minister for Sports and Pacific Games and Member for Moresby South, Justin Tkatchenko, revealed that there are several blocks of land in the nation’s capital that have been illegally acquired.

Mr Tkatchenko said this when responding to a question from Member for Kandrian-Gloucester, Joseph Lelang.

Mr Lelang asked Minister Tkatchenko to shed some light on issues surrounding the reclaimed land that is now the Koki Oval, and the actions taken to rectify the situation.

The area of the Moresby South electorate was once open sea.

Mr Tkatchenko said when Curtain Brothers built the ring road at Ela Beach, a former member of parliament asked the contractor to reclaim part of the sea next to Wanigela Village as a recreational area.

However, he explained that the title was illegally sold to a foreign company for K3 million. Mr Tkatchenko is now out to correct those past wrongs.

Through the Moresby South office, Mr Tkatchenko has already contacted the Department of Lands and Physical Planning on the matter.

They have issued a notice to show cause to forfeit the land back to the state for the people of Moresby South.

Mr Tkatchenko said there are other areas of land with similar issues in NCD. He said the end of the day, he will fight for the people for their land.
