Three major bridges along the Hiritano Highway of Central Province were officially opened yesterday.
The three bridges cost a total of K110 million under the Works and Implementation Bridge Replacement program.
Works Minister, Francis Awesa, says the program will continue in other provinces identified by the Department.
The opening also signifies the use of the other 2 bridges, Hangabanga and Brown River.
All three are built using the same model. The Works Department believes this model will overcome any possible natural disaster.
“We are confident the bridge will withstand any disasters and can last for up to 1,000 years,”Awesa said.
The Works Bridge Replacement Program is currently ongoing in the country with financial support from the Asian Development Bank, JICA, Aus Aid and the PNG Government.
It took nearly 18 months for contractor, China Harbor Engineering Company, to complete the 2-lane bridge at the Laloki River plus the bridge at Brown River and Hangabanga outside Port Moresby.
