Teams arrive in Lae for PNG Games

Provincial teams have begun arriving in Lae city, for the 6th BSP PNG Games.

The EM TV Lae crew caught up with team Central and East Sepik after their arrival at the Nadzab airport.

Both teams are underdogs in the PNG Games, and will strive to cause some upsets against big guns, NCD and Morobe.

Over 400 athletes and officials from team Central arrived at the Nadzab airport and were given a rousing welcome into Lae city.

Team Central will be represented in 24 sports including swimming, Aussie rules, table tennis, lawn bowls, snooker and squash, which are new additions to the province’s sporting codes.

Deputy General Manager, Henry Kavana said that they have arrived in full force and will be no easy defeats in the next two weeks.

Team Central are the defending champions of the men’s and women’s volleyball and cricket.

Mr Kavana said that team Central is looking at putting up a strong challenge for other provinces.

Team Central have expressed their gratitude for the support of Governor Kila Haoda and the Central provincial government for getting them to the games.

The first lot of athletes’ from team East Sepik also arrived this morning; the 36 comprising of kick boxers and paralympians.

The team were given a warm welcome at the Bugandi Secondary School, their home for the 6th PNG Games.

Many other provincial teams have also arrived today, while teams from the Highlands region are expected to arrive tomorrow.

Team Autonomous Region of Bougainville will be arriving in Lae tomorrow onboard the new MV Chebu from Buka.
