Teachers College Improvement Program

By Collee Barilae – EM TV, Lae

Delegates from the European Union and the Department of Education accompanied the Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru for the launching of a Teachers College improvement program, funded by the European Union.

Balob Teachers College in Lae is the first institute to secure funding to build classrooms and dorms.

It comes after major teachers colleges around the country struggle to produce the expected quota of teachers with the infrastructure they have.

Balob’s Principal, Jerry Hendigau explained that Balob Madang Teachers Collage and Gaulim Teachers College in the East New Britain province needed improved facilities.

The European Union project includes 18 classrooms, six administration offices and a duplex dormitory that will house 84 rooms for a male dormitory and a female dormitory.

Balob’s Teachers College infrastructure development alone expects to produce 250 teachers per year in the country.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru who attended the launching says more teachers will be expected to graduate from Balob for the rural parts of the country.

As the government moves towards free education, the strain on the country’s education system, has meant more classrooms and dorms have to be built to train more teachers.
