UPNG Launch Golden Jubilee Coins

The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) has released two commemorative coins to mark the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) Golden jubilee.

The uncirculated numismatic K2 and K5 coins were launched at the University today.

The coins are not legal tender but were engraved on silver with designs and features of the University for the Commemoration of the university’s 50th anniversary.

Being the premier learning and Research University in the country, first established in 1965, it is now a dual model mode learning institution with over five open colleges around the country. It offers academic courses from diplomas to honors.

BPNG Governor, Loi Bakani, said the coins will be available for sale and whoever wants to buy them can visit the bank and enquire.

UPNG Chancellor, Dr Nicholas Mann said the university has produced over 30,000 graduates, many of whom now hold high bureaucratic positons including Governor Bakani.

Mr Bakani said during the launch, that the design and size of bank notes and coins has changed many times in line with national events, and to mark UPNG’s 50th Jubilee as a premier state institution, the bank has released uncirculated K2 and K5 coins.

The coins are not for circulation as they are for commemorative purposes.
