The Tari Hospital, in Hela Province, is now a Level 5 Provincial Hospital.
The upgrade of its status also sees the Hela Provincial Health Authority prove its powers to manage and provide the essential health services to the people of Hela.
Members of the hospital board were sworn in in front of locals with the aim to improve the current health services at the hospital.
Oil Search Managing Director, Peter Botten, is the new hospital board chairman.
Botten said the board would thrive to provide a world-class service despite the unforeseen infrastructure at the hospital.
Oil Search Foundation will also be working closely with the Hospital Board.
Medicines San Frontiers, or Doctors Without Borders, who have been the helping hand in the province for some time now, will cease operations in March 2016.
Witnessing the occasion was Health Secretary, Pascoe Kase.
“Health is a big concern and the transformation for this health facility is for the good of the people of Hela,” Kase said.
Komo-Magarima MP, Francis Potape, said the upgrade and new direction is for the benefit of the Hela people, since health services have been lacking for some time.
“It’s about time Hela is serious in saving lives with better health services,” said Potape.
