Talks to Protect PNG’s Forests Begin

By Jack Lapauve Jr, EMTV – Port Moresby

Talks to protect PNG’s vast rainforests have begun between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Australian Forest Minister, Greg Hunt, was in the country to discuss ways forward for the implementation of the draft Asia Pacific Rainforest Recovery Plan.

When finalised, the plan will outline how countries in the region can protect tropical rainforests and identify clear actions and assistance needed to reduce deforestation in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Australia is committed to work collaboratively with its regional partners to develop and support practical actions to reduce rainforest loss”, said Minister Hunt. “We need to protect and recognise the aspirations of the regions nation”, Hunt added.

“For the protection of our high conservation and biodiversity value rainforest PNG is developing a REDD Roadmap”, Minister Tomuriesa.

Both ministers pledged to work together to reduce deforestation and realize objectives of the plan.

The progress of the draft Asia- Pacific Rainforest Recovery Plan will be discussed at the next Asia Pacific Rainforest Summit in 2016.
