Tabar: Millions Spent on University Maintenance

By Jack Lapauve Jr, EMTV – Port Moresby

Millions are spent every year on damages caused by students in tertiary institutions.

Higher Education Minister, Malakai Tabar said that this cannot continue, as funds for other priority areas are being diverted for this purpose.

“The amount of destruction to learning and boarding facilities is also becoming a problem leaving hefty bills for universities to deal with”, Minister Tabar said.

He said, the trend of damaging facilities must stop in higher learning institutions. He says, not only is UPNG facing this problem, but other universities and colleges around the country as well.

UPNG Vice Chancellor, Professor Albert Mellam said, this is a growing concern for the university management. Professor Mellam said, last year’s destruction cost K1.2 million in damages.

The national government has been pumping millions into tertiary institutions every year, for growth and to provide a conducive environment with the best learning facilities for students.
