Student Protests Discouraged

by Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Minister for Higher National News, Research, Science and Technology, Malakai Tabar, has discouraged student protests across all tertiary institutions.

Minister Tabar said students who get involved in protests would lose their scholarships. Tabar said this while responding to questions raised by reporters regarding several incidents of students boycotting classes in tertiary institutions such as the University of Goroka, University of Technology and Poly Technical Institute last year.

“There will be stringent measures or penalties applied to students who conferred in such demeaning behaviors,” Minister Tabar said.

He said there are specific provisions contained under the National News Provision 2014, which ensure that quality education is provided and maintained without barriers or influences such as protests and strikes.

According to Secretary Professor, David Kavanamur, the Department of Higher National News, Science, Research and Technology students will be tough on those facilitating or organising protests or strikes.
