With the annual SP Sports Awards fast approaching, finalists for the 14 categories, ranging from Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year, to Sports Reporter of the year, were announced today at the SP Brewery.
This premier and prestigious event of PNG’s sporting calendar will be held on the 24th of May.
The SP Sports Awards commemorates and recognizes the sporting excellence of PNG sportsmen and sportswomen, alongside those who make their amazing achievements possible.
Chairman of the selection panel, Moses Koiri, together with Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Andrew Lepani, were proud of the contributions each of the 95 nominees added towards their respective sporting codes.
Most recognizable of all categories were Sportsman of the year, which welcomed expected nominees Chris Amini Jnr., Steven Kari and Jack Veufa.
Tennis superstar Abigail Apisah, Betty Aburah and for the second time around, Toea Wisil, were 3 of the nominees for sportswoman of the year.
Mr. Lepani was pleased with the number of nominations that came through, as it demonstrated a greater appreciation of the contributions made to sports by the wider community.
This year will be the first time for the SP Awards to allow the input of the general public. Between Wednesday the 7th of May to Wednesday the 21st of May, the public are encouraged to send their votes in via SMS, in the search for the Sports Team of the year.
