Governor of East Sepik, Sir Michael Somare, visited Wewak Market Police Station yesterday after it was severely damaged during a rampage last Thursday.
He was accompanlied by boththe heads ofthe provincial police command, and Defence Force Commander at Moem Barracks as well as town lLeaders
Sir Michael called a meeting with allthe assembled heads ofthe various authorities in a bid to restore calm and order in Wewak,the provincial capital.
Sir Michael has committed full support for an independent investigative team arriving from Port Moresby on Wednesday.
This comes after an alleged rape incident following a police raid on a remote village as well asthe severe beating by police of an off duty soldier fromthe Moem Barracks.
Sir Michael’saidthe clash betweenthe disciplinary forces has disgraced both disciplines. He urged both commanders to reconcile and supportthe independent investigation and assessment ofthe damages that were sustained duringthe rampage.
Beth commanders have assured Sir Michael thatthey support anIndependentInvestigation ofthe relevant issues.
Sir Michael also met with two woman lLeadersinthe province who protested againstthe alleged rape.
