PNGDF Soldiers to Face Court

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Waigani Committal Court will decide on Friday whether to grant bail to the four soldiers accused of the brutal bashing of Jeremiah Yinu last week.

The soldiers have been charged and locked up at the Boroko police cells, each charged with one count of attempted murder.

Results from the investigation will also determine whether the case will be heard in the National Court.

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) hierarchy have been working closely with police to complete the investigations. Commander of the PNGDF, Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo says this is just the beginning of tough measures to be taken against undisciplined soldiers.

General Toropo warned servicemen and women to learn from this and maintain their professionalism both on and off duty.

Parents of Jeremiah Yinu welcomed the investigation and want justice to prevail. Jeremiah is still under close supervision by doctors at the Port Moresby General Hospitals’ Intensive Care Unit.

He has shown signs of improvement but is still in a coma.
