Sogeri Crash Claims One

by Adelaide Kari – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Eyewitness reports claim that at 5:00pm yesterday afternoon, a 25 seater bus had run off the road after the driver had attempted to overtake a car at a sharp turn.

Those who were there, first at the scene, identified a young male and female who were thrown out from the bus and hanging from trees.

The young male was rushed to Port Moresby hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, while the young female is now admitted at Pacific International Hospital. The young crash victim was scheduled for a knee reconstructiong operation today.

Most of the passengers who are currently admitted have broken bone injuries and are being treated by Dr Vemu Sudhir, PIH’s orthopaedic surgeon.

PIH confirmed that he has already operated on two other passengers.

What is known is that all the passengers attend Port Moresby International school, and were on a non-associated school trip returning from Sogeri when the incident occured.

Parents claim that they were unaware of the trip and are still in shock.

The owner of the bus and the designated driver have not been identified as yet.

Other passengers have all been discharged with only sustaining cuts and bruises.

Eye witnesses claim that they were lucky to be alive, for other cars that have veered off the same turn off, have seen none live to tell their story.
