Minister for Public Service, and Abau MP, Sir Puka Temu, has joined the ruling party, People’s National Congress.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, this afternoon in a brief media conference at his parliament office.
PM O’Neill, was with members of his PNC Party, when he made the announcement.
He said, Sir Puka’s position as a senior statesman and his experience as a three-term MP will add value to the party and to the country in light of the government’s priorities.
Sir Puka said there are two main reasons for his joining PNC. The first being that he wants to support the prime minister to continue to remain in office and for the government to remain in office for the remainder of its term.
The other reason for joining PNC, is because the Office of the Registry of Political Parties is taking steps to amend the law in respect of the number of MPs a Party must have before it is recognised as a Party.
In this context, Sir Puka’s Party, Our Development Party (ODP), will be affected as he is the only member of the party in parliament.
Sir Puka said he has submitted a letter of release to the national executive of ODP and they have released him from the party.
