Sine Suai League Set for Finals

by Shane Saroya – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

For the first time in nine years, the Sine Suai Rugby League competition in the Sine Sine Yongumul District will now have a colourful and well deserved grand finale.

Technical Director and former Kumul, Michael Mark, and the League’s President, Benjamin Kola, travelled to Port Moresby to purchase an estimated K5,000 worth of trophies and medals.

The Sine Suai Rugby League competition has a proud history of having fostered some of PNG’s top Rugby League players.

The competition will now end their season on a high note with more silverware up for grabs.

Sine Suai League has been dormant in recent years, but they have now managed to affiliate their local league competition under PNG RFL, which is seen as a major step forward for the competition itself.

Benjamin Kola, the SSI president, has been in the competition for nine years and has seen tremendous changes this year and is very grateful of the government’s support

Kola also challenged local leaders and educated villagers to come back and support the competition.

Among them is Wendy Kohun, one of the initiators and head of PNG women’s Rugby League in PNG.

Kohun was vocal on the competition saying it’s partly a way for local talent to get exposed and be scouted to play in the major league in the country, and ultimately pull the Kumuls jumper some day.

Currently there are 24 teams in the competition, divided into two divisions – The Under-21s and A grade.

The finals are most likely to be scheduled on the second week of October.
